Dr. Rajeshvar K. Sharda
Hons Bsc, MD, FRCSC
Dr. Sharda is a consultant Comprehensive Eye Physician and Surgeon (Ophthalmologist) and an Assistant Clinical Professor in the division of Ophthalmology at McMaster University.
His special focus is refractive cataract surgery and glaucoma. He is also actively involved in the diagnosis and treatment of all general ophthalmology conditions.
Dr. Sharda has a long history with the golden horseshoe area as well as Hamilton. He was born and raised nearby Oakville Ont. and spent a lot of time in Hamilton as his parents ran a family business in the area.
After attaining his Fellowship in Ophthalmology with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2011, Dr Sharda began practicing ophthalmology in Hamilton, and has over 15,000 patients in his practice.
Dr Sharda is also actively involved in teaching Ophthalmology residents and Medical students. He routinely has junior Doctors rotate through his office to learn from him.
In 2013, he worked with the Haldimand War Memorial Hospital in Dunnville, to set up an innovative cataract surgery program - the first of it’s kind in Dunnville. Over 3000 surgeries have now been carried out on patients from Dunnville, Hamilton and the surrounding areas with excellent results.
Success rate from these surgeries is 99.7%.
Dr Sharda has purchased a number of top of the line technologies to ensure his patients have rapid access to all the tests and procedures they may need, without ever having to leave his office. These include:
optical coherence tomography (OCT)
visual field testing
selective laser trabeculoplasty
YAG laser capsulotomy and iridotomy
minor eyelid surgery suite
He and his team pride themselves on taking the time to explain all tests and procedures fully to patients as well as providing a comfortable and modern environment in which their eye care is undertaken.
It is no surprise that they have been awarded the Hamilton Spectator Platinum Readers Choice Award for Best Ophthalmologist two years in a row (2014, 2015).
Dr. Sharda achieved a 95% high school average and was named an Ontario scholar all 5 years of high school. At McMaster he was one of the first students to undertake the honors in B.Sc in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology specialist stream. He was 1 of only 8 graduates from this program. He took the Medical College Admission Test and finished in the top 5% of all 50,000 test takers across all North America. While at Queens University of Medical school he was elected President of his class. He was awarded the Barsky prize in the field of Ophthalmology for his research.
In 2005, he began a research scholarship at the University of Toronto. In 2006 he was back at McMaster to start his residency training at St. Joseph’s and Hamilton Health Sciences Hospitals. He was chosen as chief resident in his second to last year and also received the best resident in ophthalmology award in 2011.
